The Show
Back to the show I go.
Every year of playing club ultimate, I've qualified. I like to think I'm just a stud, or that like Al Davis I "Just Win Baby," but we all know it is just because I am fortunate enough to play with excellent teammates.
In any case, the series has been taking most of my time away from the blog, but I hope to write some things here in regards to Nationals in the coming days. I'll start with this:
Rules of Nationals:
1. Two Teams from the NW will be in the Semis.
This has been the case ever since 2000. The only year with 3 was 2004. Who will be the odd man out this year? Not clear until seeding and pools are announced, but my guess is Furious. All will make quarters.
2. Either DoG, Ring, or Pike will be in the Semis.
It has been this way since 94. Earlier if you include other Boston teams. Pike seems like an odd addition hear, but recent history counts for a team that has no significant losses from last year's semifinal finish. Two of these teams could make semis. All should make quarters. Much of this streak is related to DoG, but these three represent the Strongest of the East Coast.
3. Bravo and Condors will make Quarters.
They both have since at least 2001, possibly earlier.
4. Twisted won't make quarters.
No Second Team from a single city has ever done that, have they?
5. One unexpected team will go on a Tear.
Most likely candidate is Chain. I wouldn't put it past Potomac either.
Other thoughts:
Sockeye, Jam, Furious, DoG, Bravo, Condors and Ring have made quarters in the last 2 years. Sockeye, Furious, Ring, DoG, Condors and Bravo have made it for the past 3. Furious, DoG, Condors and Bravo for the last 4. Furious, DoG and Condors for the last 6. Before that? I don't know. Why doesn't the UPA keep all of this info readily available?
Will the wind be strong or weak?
Will the rains come to Fla?
Will Potomac carry on the Pig tradition of pissing of the locals?
I wish today were the 26th.

"Twisted won't make quarters.
No Second Team from a single city has ever done that, have they?"
Well, Boss Hogg came one point away only two years ago, right?

Sure sure. I didn't mean to imply that Twisted is a bad team, or that they have no shot... but I also think that they're too young at this point...
That same year, didn't they narrowly make the prequarter that they lost by one on a point differential tie-break of one?
My memory is foggy.
The Right one point wins at Nationals can carry you a long way with the power pools. Ask those Jersey boys from 2004...
On the other hand, maybe Twisted is young and dumb enough to not understand that they're too new to make real noise...
I wish, again, that all of the information from past Nationals (and even regionals for that matter) was available and formatted in a standard, useful manner. (Maybe if it is that important to me, I should take some initiative...)

No one cares who comes in 13th - not even the teams that come in 13th.

Former 13th place finisher.

Players with too much time on their hands like myself are interested. This way I can hope to establish trends and occupy myself while biding my time until the battle begins in two weeks.
I think it might also lend a shred of credibility to the whole "sport" we play.
If those teams were split up not only by region but by finals, semis, quarters and shitbox, that would suffice, methinks.
I shouldn't have to buy a book from TL and AZ to get the info...

You want the full scores, pools and brackets of every nationals in history? I can guarantee such information is not compiled in any one single location - not even a long overdue history book.
Your best bet would be to ask the UPA if they'll let you sit in a corner for a day or two while going through the back issues of every UPA newsletter for the past 25 years. Even that would probably only get you about 90% of the way there, but if you promised to put it all up on the web you might be able to get one of those Innovation Grants to cover your plane fare.

Before 1999, there were no quarters (maybe it was 1998?) - two pools, straight to semis.
Snapple (arguably a 2nd Boston team) missed the semis by point differential in 1996 (arguably the weakest nationals field in many years).

I compiled a list of seeds and finishes and gave it to Joe Seidler, who had it on his web site for a while, but I can't find it now.
Quarters began in 1999.
Earth Atomizer finished 3-2 in 1990, a game out of semis, and Earth was definitely a Boston team, although you could argue that it was Titanic (First Time Gary) that was the 2nd Boston team, as they finished 3rd in the region behind Earth.
A lot of results for the past 12 years are on rsd. Go to rsd via google and use the advanced search to find results for each year. (Remember that Nationals used to be a week or two later, but the volume of posts wasn't that great.)
You can get the results for the past five years (except maybe 2001) by going to the UPA site, which still has the official web sites for each championship.
Oh, 1988 women's finals was between two Boston teams, Godiva and Smithereens.
For completeness, in 1991, East Bay and South Bay both qualified for Nationals (both are from Bay Area, if you count SFO/OAK as one city); there have been many years where two "Boston" teams qualified, and NYNY and Graffiti both qualified in 1991-1993. And at World Clubs in 1991, there were two Boston teams and two NY teams finishing in the top 5. And Fury (and previously Da Fence) and Home Brood are both from the Bay Area and have qualified for Nationals together several times.

"[I am] in a unique position to confirm or disconfirm that suspicion."
But I won't.
Last I heard Buhl was trying to give himself an aneurysm by coaching some Metro East college team.
Though it does appear that I've attracted at least one reader from Pike or NY, or something...
